I got the movie DVD because it had Julia Roberts. simple!
Next I discussed the book and the movie with a friend at length a few months ago! Both of us kind of find comfort in the fact that people do this… leave! and then find themselves and come back new!
Wanted to watch The Descendants today, however the file did not play on my player for some reason, and I had to look for a dvd, which led me to watching Eat Pray Love!
I cannot really say I enjoyed the movie, but I did not dislike it either! Julia Roberts is as natural as she is always, and its such a delight to watch her movies! As far the story line is concerned, I felt that it was too predictable, though I am not sure one of those people who thinks of eating when someone says ROME! Pray yes India! Love, Bali! umm.. not really sure! I connected well with the thoughts in the movie though… there are time when one has to, and should figure out a way to figure themselves out! not necessarily when you are feeling devastated, but otherwise as well!
I at times do not really like the way India is depicted in these Hollywood movies… But I guess that is how a lot of firangs see India when they take their first taxi ride in the country.
After I finished the movie, I went to Elizabeth Gilbert’s website to read something about the book itself, and managed to read an excerpt of the book, the part where she is staying in Rome… Really liked those two pages, and felt like reading more! Maybe some day, when the movie is not fresh in the mind!
So all in all, if you have read the book, stay away from the movie! If you have seen the movie, stay away from the book! You just might not like the combination!
Here is something that I really liked from the movie (I am sure it has been picked up from the book)
“In the end, I’ve come to believe in something I call “The Physics of the Quest.” A force in nature governed by laws as real as the laws of gravity. The rule of Quest Physics goes something like this: If you’re brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting, which can be anything from your house to bitter, old resentments, and set out on a truth-seeking journey, either externally or internally, and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher and if you are prepared, most of all, to face and forgive some very difficult realities about yourself, then the truth will not be withheld from you.“
