  1. Hi Prashant,

Really thankful to you for sharing the information. It is going to help and guide a lot of people.

I have a very peculiar experience, wanted to check if you heard about something similar :
I got 2 calls from recruiters in Canberra and they said my profile fits the job perfectly. Only BIG problem was that the position required a AU citizen with some clearance formalities. Since I am a PR holder only unfortunately I could not be considered for those positions in Canberra.
However there are similar jobs in Melbourne and Sydney area to which I have applied, but not got even 1 call.

I am just wondering if you had any similar experience and/or have some info from recruiters on such cases.

    Thanks
    RK

I lived in Canberra from October 2014 – January 2015, and this is the standard response I got for almost 99% profiles. Most of the work in Canberra is for Federal Govt, and you would usually required a NV1 clearance in addition to being a citizen to secure an interview. There are times when the client does not put that condition, however recruiters keep that filter to be absolutely safe!

If you are still in India, and applying for jobs in Sydney and Melbourne, I am not surprised that you are not getting responses!

    Hi Prashant,

Do you have any idea about average monthly living expense (including rent, food, transport, etc.) for a bachelor in Sydney?

    • Prashant on -

Approximately $70 to $105 per day, depending on the suburb and day care reputation. There are government rebates also available depending on salary bracket of the family.

    • harsha on -

That’s outrageous. With twin boys, I am going to have a tough time ( in case we get through).

      • Prashant on -

Yes, it’s expensive! If both the parents are earning, it’s not big an issue though, if one of you is home, you don’t have to send them to a day care.

  3. Do you have any idea about the options for Indian doctors (PG)? Asking as I am looking options for my wife as well.

    • Prashant on -

Hey Jony! I have no idea honestly… You would need to check forums like expat forum for such specific queries…

    Dear Prashant,

You have always been helpful and with this blog that you have started recently, you are going to help many many people – who put everything on stake to be there in Australia with very little to none insight about the country. Long way to go mate.

    Thanks very much

    Hi Prashant

Can’t thank you enough for sharing your experience through these blogs 🙂

I had a query about schools in Australia. I understand that the academic year is from Jan to Dec; however, what if someone gets there in say March or April? Do you know if schools would be open to enroll kids at that time?

    • Prashant on -

Yes, if the kid is eligible they don’t have to wait till the end or beginning of a session. I wouldn’t have known this however Jai Saraswat’s daughter started school mid year. Hope you remember him too?

      • Monalisa on -

Oh great! Thanks, Prashant. Yes, I do remember Jai…has he moved to Australia too? I’m in touch with Meeta on Whatsapp 🙂

        • Prashant on -

Yeah! Me, Sunil and Jai moved around the same time and lived in Canberra together before families started arriving starting January this year

  6. Hi Prashant,

I must say it’s one of the best informative write up that I have come across regarding Australia immigration. My visa 190 application is in process. I would like to know the best time to come there (Sydney). Some says Feb-Apr is best and May-Aug is slow (winter) and then Sep-Nov is better. What would you recommend? My personal choice is to reach after mid July 2016 due to some commitments but confused if it would disturb my job hunt. I would be focusing Bus Analyst and MS Dynamics CRM jobs.

Please advise as per your experience there.

    • Prashant on -

Mid July 2016 should be good as far as I know, I am however not an expert Athar! You would need to take this risk on your own terms. I say come ASAP, start searching, and start with what you can! Rest follows!

      • Prashanth, I am in the same boat as Athar. My PR process is underway, hoping to get an invite and the visa soon.
Now, how easy is getting the odd job to survive until you get a desired one? I am thinking of coming in alone, only bringing the family later.
Would you know which city/state be best for a Business Analyst/Consultant?
        Thanks.

        • Prashant on -

No jobs are easy Basil! You will have to make a significant effort to get going at any level…

Coming in alone first helps with settling in quickly as you can share houses and all and minimise your expenses.

I can’t really answer the second question for you. I am not aware of any established patterns by city or by roles! Sydney and Melbourne have the maximum amount of jobs , followed by Brisbane, and Adelaide! Perth is a good place to be in as well, however it’s too far

  7. Very informative post. Thanks for taking the time to pen down your experience. I am sure may, me included, would find this very useful. Thanks once again.

  8. Very well chartered FAQ prashant. Really helpful and eye opener too. Thanks for taking this effort which has been helpful.

  9. Nicely written Prashant, good info. Can you add some info about the cost of living and weather? When converting $$ into Rupees it sure sounds a lot until you account for the higher cost of living. Also, I realize being in the Southern Hemisphere the weather pattern is opposite but is it as harsh as Indian summers?

Perhaps another post about living in Aus, the daily, monthly and yearly grind…

    • Prashant on -

Nalin, it’s kind of simpler than most people think it is! You earn in dollars, you spend in dollars! If you start converting your maths would improve because of constant calculations, but not your quality of life 🙂

Weather has its own patterns, and wiki is the best source to learn more about it! Sun here is very harsh, and a few layers of sunscreen are a must to keep your skin from burning… This is my first winters in Sydney, and so far it has been generally nice. But like I said, read about it on wiki to get a better view!

Costs/ survival etc in a few days for sure!

  10. Thanks for sharing your experience and making everyone else learn!! It will definitely help.

  11. Thanks for your tips Prashant :), if you dont mind, can you please share your resume format ? Thanks.

    • Prashant on -

Thanks Jose! My cv is now a basic text cv with the following sections :

Summary ( includes my experience, locations, and roles)
Name of my clients and their lines of business
List of my skills and expertise level
      Certifications

      And then detailed pages of
      Role/ Company / Duration/ location / Project/ Accomplishments/ Responsibilities

  12. Pete, nice one bro. It surely is a helpful blog and its so great that you shared this with all.
I would share it with few colleagues in similar phase. A great success though as i know the struggle that you guys went through this journey or should i say “fun”

Now how does friendly gesture of crowd funding sounds for fellow mates..:)

    • Prashant on -

Sallu bhai! The problem is that there is no crowd 🙂 if you are planning, I am there 🙂

  13. Nishant on -

Great write up should help the guys. Detailed yet crisp it covers a lot of critical areas.
